How long does it take to master intermediate yoga postures?

I’ve been doing yoga for a half hour in the morning and a half hour in the evening for a couple weeks now; I’m taking a formal class starting next month so I’ve been trying to practice beforehand with the FitTV programs on yoga that they air. However, when they show challenging postures (like the crane), I can’t do them yet. I understand that I wouldn’t, because I’m a beginner, but I don’t want to feel self-conscious once I start the class because I can’t do them.

Everyone develops at different times so its hard to tell when you’d be able to do some of the more difficult postures. But I wouldn’t worry about not being able to do certain postures, half the challenge of yoga is learning how to do certain postures…. you can’t expect to learn them over night.

And the main reason you should take a yoga class is so that you can get help to do those certain postures! Everyone in a yoga class at one time was a beginner and was at the same point you were, so try not to worry about what everyone else is doing, just concentrate on what your doing.

The mindset you need to have is complete concentration on you and your breathing, your movement, your body… not anyone elses. The only thing you should notice about other people is the energy they release in the room, or if it looks like they are a step ahead of you, you can always learn from them. Don’t feel intimidated! You’ll be fine im sure :-) Good luck!
